Abstract (English):
In this paper, a study of the state, efficiency and prospects of local self-government - one of the most important factors in the development of small towns in Russia is carried out. The materials of the report of the All-Russian Association for the Development of Local Government "On the state of local self-government in the Russian Federation in 2019, prospects for its development and proposals for improving the organization of local self-government", published in November 2020, as well as the "Spatial Development Strategy of Russia until 2025", adopted in 2019, were selected as a documentary basis for the analysis. The main purpose of the study is to assess the prospects for the development of small towns in the context of the present federal government policy. The answer to this question is crucial for determining the nature and structure of the actions of local self-government bodies in rural areas to overcome the existing depressive state in the socio-economic sphere.
